*The Toronto violinist who has been crowned top soloist at the 2011 London Kiwanis music festival learned about the fest from one of the best.
Sarah Velasco, 18, and completing second year at the University of Toronto, has won the festival’s Rose Bowl.
The prize brings $1,500 and a chance to play with Orchestra London.
“I was surprised. I just wanted to play (well),” Velasco said Monday. “I get to play with Orchestra London now. I think that would be such a good opportunity.”
That part of the prize should put Velasco in the company of violinist Mary-Elizabeth Brown, the orchestra’s associate concertmaster.
It would be fitting. Velasco learned about the Kiwanis fest from Brown, a Rose Bowl winner, too.
Previous winners also include such classical music stars as violinists Scott St. John and Jennifer Orchard, both with U.S.-tied careers, and pianist Angela Park.
Velasco’s performances of movements from concertos by Mozart and Tchaikovsky won the unanimous approval of the judges, it was announced.
